INVOCATION

HYMN OF PRAISE
“Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)”

Amazing grace how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found, Was blind but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed

Chorus:
My chains are gone I’ve been set free
My God my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
Unending love amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God who called me here below
Will be forever mine
Will be forever mine
You are forever mine

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Ground our faith in your triumph, O Mighty One,
that we may labor with perseverance and confidence,
lifting our voices in prayer as we say:

Surely it is God who saves us;
we will trust in him and not be afraid.

Gracious One, give your church the words and wisdom
to prevail over all that may threaten or divide,
that we may endure joyfully and gain our souls.

Surely it is God who saves us;
we will trust in him and not be afraid.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
AND RECONCILIATION
Brief silent consideration of how we have responded to our personal and congregational opportunities to do good, as we face ourselves honestly in the presence of the Almighty.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE
May Almighty God have mercy on us
to bless our good works
and forgive us our sins,
and lead us into everlasting life.

PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory,
for ever. Amen.

THE BIBLE READING
Links to multiple translations:
Amos 5:18-24

18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.

19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

HYMN OF CELEBRATION
“Immortal Invisible God Only Wise”

Immortal invisible God only wise
In light inaccessible, Hid from our eyes
Most blessed most glorious, The Ancient of Days
Almighty victorious, Thy great name we praise.

Unresting unhasting, And silent as light
Nor wanting nor wasting, Thou rulest in might
Thy justice like mountains, High soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains, Of goodness and love

To all life thou givest, To both great and small
In all life thou livest, The true life of all
We blossom and flourish, As leaves on the tree
And wither and perish, But naught changeth thee

Great Father of glory, Pure Father of light
Thine angels adore thee, All veiling their sight
All praise we would render, O help us to see
‘Tis only the splendor, Of light hideth thee

PASSING THE PEACE

May the peace of Christ be with you all!
And also with you!

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON
Everyone is invited to share as the Pastor leads a discussion of these sermon points.
JUSTICE: Rolling Waters & Everlasting Streams

Amos quotes God as calling for justice
Do you know what I want? I want justice—oceans of it. I want fairness—rivers of it. That’s what I want. That’s all I want. Vs 23 (MSG)

Very bad horrible day
It will be like someone who runs from a lion and meets a bear! Or like someone who comes home and puts his hand on the wall—only to be bitten by a snake!   Vs 19 (GNT)

Stinging and challenging rebuke
I can’t stand your religious meetings.
I’m fed up with your conferences and conventions.
I want nothing to do with your religion projects,
your pretentious slogans and goals.
I’m sick of your fund-raising schemes,
your public relations and image making.   Vs 21 (MSG)

 Even the prescribed offerings
When you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will not accept the animals you have fattened to bring me as offerings.    Vs 22 (GNT)

Who’s the music for?
I’ve had all I can take of your noisy ego-music.
When was the last time you sang to me?    Vs 23 (MSG)

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP
The Altar in our hearts is always open

HYMN OF DEDICATION
“On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand”

On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand
And cast a wishful eye
To Canaan’s fair and happy land
Where my possessions lie

Chorus:
I am bound for the promised land;
I am bound for the promised land!
Oh who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land!

All o’er those wide extended plains
Shines one eternal day
There God the Son forever reigns
And scatters night away

Chorus:
I am bound for the promised land;
I am bound for the promised land!
Oh who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land!

No chilling winds nor poisonous breath
Can reach that healthful shore
Sickness and sorrow pain and death
Are felt and feared no more

Chorus:
I am bound for the promised land;
I am bound for the promised land!
Oh who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land!

When shall I reach that happy place
And be forever blessed
When shall I see my Father’s face
And in His bosom rest

Chorus:
I am bound for the promised land;
I am bound for the promised land!
Oh who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land!
