INVOCATION

REAFFIRMATION OF THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT

Pastor:
Brothers and sisters in Christ:
Through the Sacrament of Baptism
we are initiated into Christ’s holy Church.
We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation
and given new birth through water and the Spirit.
All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price.
Through the reaffirmation of our faith
we renew the covenant declared at our baptism,
acknowledge what God is doing for us,
and affirm our commitment to Christ’s holy Church.

On behalf of the whole Church, I ask you:
Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness,
reject the evil powers of this world,
and repent of your sin?
I do.
Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you
to resist evil, injustice, and oppression
in whatever forms they present themselves?
I do.
Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior,
put your whole trust in his grace,
and promise to serve him as your Lord,
in union with the Church which Christ has opened
to people of all ages, nations, and races?
I do.
According to the grace given to you,
will you remain faithful members of Christ’s holy Church
and serve as Christ’s representatives in the world?
I will.

Let us join together in professing the Christian faith
as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Eternal Father:
When nothing existed but chaos,
you swept across the dark waters
and brought forth light.
In the days of Noah
you saved those on the ark through water.
After the flood you set in the clouds a rainbow.
When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt,
you led them to freedom through the sea.
Their children you brought through the Jordan
to the land which you promised.

Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Tell of God’s mercy each day.

In the fullness of time you sent Jesus,
nurtured in the water of a womb.
He was baptized by John and anointed by your Spirit.
He called his disciples
to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection
and to make disciples of all nations.

Declare his works to the nations,
his glory among all the people.

Pour out your Holy Spirit,
and by this gift of water call to our remembrance
the grace declared to us in our baptism.
For you have washed away our sins,
and you clothe us with righteousness throughout our lives,
that dying and rising with Christ
we may share in his final victory.

All praise to you, Eternal Father,
through your Son Jesus Christ,
who with you and the Holy Spirit
lives and reigns for ever. Amen.

The Holy Spirit work within you,
that having been born through water and the Spirit,
you may live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE
“Come to the Water”

Oh let all
who thirst, let them come to the water.
And let all
who have nothing, let them come
to the Lord.
Without money,
without price.
Why should you
pay the price except for The Lord?

And let all who seek,
let them come to the water.
And let all who have nothing,
let them come to the Lord.
Without money,
without strife. Why should you spend your life except for The Lord?

And let all who toil, let them come
to the water.
And let all who are weary,
let them come
to the Lord.
All who labor
without rest. How can your soul find rest except for The Lord?

And let all the poor,
let them come to the water.
Bring the ones
who are laden,
bring them all to the Lord.
Bring the children
without might.
Easy the load and light.
come to the Lord.
Come.

THE BIBLE READING
Links to multiple translations:
Mark 1:4-11

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

HYMN OF CELEBRATION
“A Pure River”

And He showed me a pure river of the water of life
Clear as crystal proceeding out of the throne of God
In the Midst of the street of it
and on either side of the river was the Tree of Life.

And I saw a new Heaven and I saw a new earth
For the old earth was all passed away.
And I saw a new Jerusalem
coming from the throne of God.
And I heard the voice of God say,
“I’ll wipe all the tears away from your eyes.

There will be no more death this I say.
There will be no more sorrow,
Or dying, or pain,
for these things are all passed away.

And He showed me a pure river of the water of life
Clear as crystal proceeding out of the throne of God
In the Midst of the street of it
and on either side of the river was the Tree of Life.

And I saw a great wall around that city
of pure gold,
And the wall
was a clear jasper stone; three gates
on each side of it
And angels nearby,
and the names of the twelve tribes thereon.
There was no sun, neither was there
a moon,
for the glory of God
was its light.
And the gates of that city will never be closed,
for there is no darkness or night.

And He showed me a pure river of the water of life
Clear as crystal proceeding out of the throne of God
In the Midst of the street of it
and on either side of the river was the Tree of Life.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON
Series: The Best Part of Heaven
Affirmation: We believe one baptism for the remission of sins.
“Outward Sign of Inward Grace”
Everyone is invited to share as the Pastor leads a discussion of these sermon points.

Forgiveness, Renewal, Empowerment, Sanctification
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.   Mark 1:8 (KJV)

Born of water and the spirit
Unless a person submits to this original creation—the ‘wind-hovering-over-the-water’ creation, the invisible moving the visible, a baptism into a new life—it’s not possible to enter God’s kingdom. John 3:5 (MSG)

Put on Christ
By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe—Christ’s life, the fulfillment of God’s original promise. Galatians 3:27 (MSG)

 Mystical Unity
There is one body and one Spirit, just as there is one hope to which God has called you. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, there is one God and Father of all people, who is Lord of all, works through all, and is in all.           Ephesians 4:4-6 (GNT)

Bring Everyone into the Relationship
Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Matthew 28:19 (GNT)

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP
The Altar in our hearts is always open

HYMN OF DEDICATION
“Shall We Gather at the River”

Shall we gather at the river
Where bright angel feet have trod
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God

Yes we’ll gather at the river
The beautiful the beautiful river
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God

On the margin of the river
Washing up its silver spray
We will talk and worship ever
All the happy golden day

Yes we’ll gather at the river
The beautiful the beautiful river
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God

Ere we reach the shining river
Lay we ev’ry burden down
Grace our spirits will deliver
And provide a robe and crown

Yes we’ll gather at the river
The beautiful the beautiful river
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God

Soon we’ll reach the shining river
Soon our pilgrimage will cease
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace

Yes we’ll gather at the river
The beautiful the beautiful river
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God
